North Lanarkshire police and township officials have come together to “solve growing problems caused by people who ride quads and off-road motorcycles” across government territory.

They jointly launched Operation MotoX, where the local government funds new motorcycles that will be used to reinforce mobile patrols and reach areas where the vehicles will be used to talk to drivers.

Officials have also used the new bikes in finding high-risk missing persons and combating youth disorder incidents since receiving the new equipment, funded by the North Lanarkshire Local Development Program.

Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell said Lanarkshire Live: “We will not accept the danger associated with the illegal use of off-road motorcycles and quads on public footpaths, parks and streets.

“We will use the bikes in problem areas and target those who put the community at risk, which in turn is part of our commitment to addressing the problems that the local people tell us.

“My message is clear – don’t use bikes or quads illegally; otherwise, we will enforce the matter that could result in your being reported, your vehicle being confiscated, your driving license lost, or a charge being made for your child causing it or allowing your child to use it. “

He added: “We are committed to combating antisocial behavior across North Lanarkshire and our officials will focus on distraction, education and enforcement to combat this problem.

“The bikes have been used to support ongoing incidents and we will be using them to support disruption plans in areas that are difficult to get to by police vehicles or on foot.”

Council President Jim Logue said, “Our communities tell us that the increased use of ATVs in parks, open spaces and even on sidewalks is creating real safety concerns and a public nuisance.

“Operation MotoX will help to address this problem and educate drivers and parents who are considering buying such machines for their children about the legal situation regarding their use.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners in Police Scotland to address these issues and make our communities safer for all.”
